I’ve decided to provide case studies as a feature for my site, mainly to give back to the community which has taught me so much over the years. The video tutorial I’m going to do features Rhinoceros, a NURBS modeler for windows. It’s absolutely great for creating 2D logos as you don’t have to deal with bezier handles to get the curvatures you want. If this sounds like something that you’ve had to deal with in your current applications (photoshop/illustrator) then this tutorial is a must-see for you. I’ve broken the tutorials into a 3 part series, first in rhino where the curves are generated, then to 3d studio max where the text is transformed and finally photoshop where we stylize a high resolution image. Please let me know what you think of this series.
In this next part we focus on taking the shape data we’ve created from Rhinoceros and importing into 3D Studio Max. From there we will extrude the shapes, colorize them and perform various types of deformations to the type to get the desired curving/enlarging effect. Check it out, and let me know if there are any parts that are confusing - this will help me produce better tutorials in the future for you guys!
In this final part we use Photoshop CS3 to stylize the text. Keep in mind that this was rendered out into individual layers for the text and the logo to make my life easier when working in photoshop. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
Great tutorial. You were a little slow getting going on the first video. Time spent humming and hawing over exacting the fit of the curves could’ve been cropped without omitting content. Moved a bit fast in the second, but I like how you mention the shortcut keys as you flit from screen to screen–really helps in learning to speed your workflow. Never mentioned why you chose to perform these operations in each of these various programs, which would’ve been interesting. Good job on the case study and nice logo.

Pretty good demo, though I fear not bezier curves:)
I agree. The first part of this tutorial I think I was more fumbling around with the microphone and getting used to actually working with something in my face than actually paying attention to what i was doing. Moving forward I will definitely plan out the structure a little better. I chose these 3 programs just to showcase each of them. This entire project most certainly could be done in 1 program, say illustrator, but I’m just trying to demonstrate an alternative path for those not keen on that application.
This was a pretty good tutorial. I look forward to seeing others you do in the future!
EGG: I’ve gone back and cut up the video a bit to make it shorter and it really makes it flow better. Thanks for the suggestion!
Great post! Just wanted to let you know you have a new subscriber- me!
You are a very smart person!
Keep working ,great job!
Stunning issue, did not thought it was going to be so stunning when I saw your title.
